Like you mother, your grandmother knows what is best!

They say wisdom comes with age — so when you’re looking for advice from an expert or guru without having to shell out cash or much effort, go to grandma instead. And chances are, she knows what to recommend and advise.

A Bustle writer has collated some golden recommendations from both of her maternal and paternal grandmothers who have aged gracefully, in her opinion.

Here are 11 beauty tips to help you age beautifully.

1. Stop Using Soap

One beauty tip is to “take care of your skin” but the most crucial advise grandma gave is to avoid using soap as well as exfoliating cleansers and drying lotions as these can be too harsh for sensitive faces. Instead, she says to go for light, oil-based cleansers with a proper SPF coverage,

2. Have Proper Sleep

Getting enough sleep is a crucial part of one’s beauty routine, according to the writer’s credible sources (ie grandma, mother, and older sister). Too, not getting enough sleep at night will make one’s skin and hair look exhausted.

3. Quality Wins the Quality vs Quantity Game Every Time

The writer’s grandma is a personal fan of Chanel cosmetics. “Cutting corners with your products won’t work,” she notes. Spending money for beauty products will be worth it if you invest them on longwearing and high-quality ones.

4. Take Care of Your Hair

Chemicals and treatments are known to damage hair strands. Factoring in the hair’s natural aging process will cause it even more harm. Keep your product count low and only do treatments as necessary.

5. Use Vinegar To Wash Hot Tools

The vinegar will take away all the grime and will ensure that the tool will work properly even after cleaning.

6. A Good Beautician Will Go A Long Way

“I’ve had the same colorist for 25 years and I wouldn’t trust anyone else with my hair,” the writer’s grandma says. A regular beauty stylist will know your taste, needs, wants and the procedure to the service you want. It also won’t hurt if you and your stylist will develop a friendship over the years.

7. Baths Are More Important Than Showers

Baths strips away one’s dead skin, moisturizes it and helps calm a person’s nerves as compared to just taking a shower.

8. Always Look Presentable

“Walking out the door means looking your very best, whatever that means to you,” according to the writer’s sources. Looking and feeling your best before leaving home is important for anyone’s beauty regimen and it depends on you on however you want to define the terms.

9. Regularly Wash Your Makeup Brushes

Make sure you clean your makeup brushes regularly to rid them of unwanted bacteria.

10. Avoid Styling Hair When It’s Wet

“Hair will break more when it’s wet than when it’s dry,” the source tells the writer. Grandma recommends lightly blowdrying or airdrying before styling it.

11. Treat Yo Self

Always take the time to do something for yourself. “Time spent on yourself is never wasted.”
