Do our grandparents really know what’s best?

They’re older and wiser, and they have no shortage of advice to give. Yet, how useful are their tips? There’s so much more accessible information about beauty and skincare now, leading us to wonder if their advice is still relevant.

We gathered a list of tips, complete with feedback on whether or not they are all that effective, by asking the staff here at Mashable what advice their grandparents had to give.

Tips that work well for us

“You gotta moisturize! Oil of Olay kept my 87-year-old grandma lookin’ ageless!”

“Always use moisturizer on your neck as well as your face.”

“Eyebrows must be trained.”

“Don’t pick at your acne.”

“My grandpa would put salt on a mosquito bite to stop the itching. It works, but he would go a little crazy. Once at a restaurant, he was pouring salt from the shaker onto his skin.”

“Wash your hands way more than you think you need to.”

“Dab at your face – never pull.”

“Don’t accept food from someone with open cuts on their hands.”

“Never go to bed with makeup on.”

“My grandma suggests leaving coconut oil in your hair for stronger hair.”

“Dabbing lemon on dark spots or acne scars to brighten irritated skin”

“Tweezers and eyebrow pencils are important, but only if you can use them correctly.”

Tips that worked well for our grandparents, but not so much for us

“Always wear silver jewelry on the funky side.”

” For elegance, must be looking for 14k gold necklaces.”

“For some reason, people got sprayed by skunks more often and would bathe in tomato juice.”

“Put vaseline all over your whole face every night before bed. My grandmother has perfect skin!”

“Vaseline works for everything.”

“Freebies are a blessing. Always spend $ 50-$ 100 on Clinique products to get a free tote!”

“My grandparents would have a spoonful of wheat germ every day. They’re almost 90 so clearly that worked!”

“Use Ponds Cold Cream to remove makeup.”

“My grandma is the most glamorous you can get, so she always encourages matching your outfit with big accessory statements, like chunky necklaces, big earrings, bracelets and matching handbags. Can’t say I follow that one, though.”

“My grandma’s motto is ‘Beauty is pain.'”

“My mom said that when she thinks of Saturdays in her house growing up, her mom was always making chicken soup with curlers in her hair.”

“My grandmother’s philosophy was to have your own personal uniform or go-to outfit. Hers was a plain white button down blouse, khaki pants, black leather belt, black leather purse and lipstick. Never had to think about outfits!”

Tips we totally ignore

“Red heads shouldn’t wear red lipstick.”

“‘You’d look so pretty with blush on,’ said to me while I was wearing blush.”

“Never line your bottom lashes.”

“Sunscreen is the only product you need.”

“Really, vaseline works for everything.”

“Put lotion in your hair to make it softer.”

“Use Neosporin on pimples.”

“Use toothpaste on pimples.”

“Always wear a bra.”

“Teasing combs are a necessity for all hairstyles.”

“Women should shave their face to get rid of stray hairs.”

“Put a piece of thick tape across your upper back throughout the whole day to have good posture.”
