Expert slimming secrets to dressing 10 pounds lighter – Sacramento Bee

The sun is shining and the days are lasting longer, which can mean only one thing – it’s time to dust of your collection of flirty dresses, tops and white pants. And if you’re like the 9 in 10 women recently surveyed by Wakefield Research for Slimfast, you’ve probably got a few pieces of clothing in the wrong size. (We’re looking at you, worn-looking wrap dress from those college days.)

The proper name for this is “Locked Closet Syndrome,” or in other words, the practice of keeping clothing that once fit and now don’t. These items, generally speaking, are in your “goal, smaller size” that you just don’t feel confident wearing, shares Jenn Falik, a style and beauty expert.

“Confidence is the best accessory,” Falik says. “While 63 percent of participants say that reaching their goal weight was the biggest confidence boost, you can still be confident in the way you look and carry yourself without cutting calories.”

Now that’s a trend we can get behind – nothing looks better than a woman who is happy in the skin she’s in. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have that reflect on the outside as well.

A critical component to being happy in what you’re wearing? Determining the right fit. Comfort is key. Ask yourself, “Are the clothes pinching you in places that you don’t want to pinch?” Or, “Do I feel comfortable moving about in this?” According to Falik, trial and error is the name of the game. Don’t be too quick to write off a particular style or cut because you think it “won’t work.” You just might surprise yourself.

“Don’t be afraid to try on different sizes,” she says. “More often than not, it’s the combination of material, cut and design that will determine the way an item of clothing fits your body. You could end up looking truly fantastic in a style that you’ve never actually considered.”

Check out Falik’s three slimming items every woman needs in her closet.

– Nude heels. These can be either stilettos or wedges. Find a pair that are a close match to your skin tone and instantly elongate your legs.

– The perfect pair of jeans. Jeans are great because they can be as casual or dressy as you want to make ’em. Just be careful of the fit, if it’s too tight you’ll end up with “pancake butt” and if too loose, nobody wins.

– A little black dress. Black has always been a forgiving color. And it looks ah-mazing on everyone. The best part – you can let your accessories do the talking. A colorful belt or scarf? Yes, please. Add a statement necklace and now you’re ready for a night out with the girls.
