Routine, active lifestyle are Steve Spurrier’s secrets to longevity, and other … – AL.com

Steve Spurrier turned 70 today and though he now regularly gets questions about retirement, the Head Ball Coach has no plans to hang up his whistle anytime soon.

“I remember one time I asked Donald Trump, ‘When do you think you will retire?’ He said, ‘Retire, why? That’s for people who hate their job,'” Spurrier told The State in a lengthy birthday Q&A. “I said, ‘You know what, you’re probably right.'”

It became a popular theory that South Carolina’s disappointing 7-6 season in 2014 might have been enough to drive Spurrier to the golf course, but with the benefit of hindsight he’s chosen to look at the positives that came from the year — another winning season and another bowl victory.

So what, besides a positive outlook and elite coaching chops, is his secret to longevity? Spurrier eats the same lunch almost every day — a turkey sandwich from Firehouse subs — follows advice set out in Dr. David Agus’ book “A Short List for a Long Life,” and maintains an active lifestyle and a regular workout routine.

All of which brings us back to this video of The State’s Josh Kendall working out with the HBC himself. It’s worth another look:
