Kristin Cavallari: “The 18-Year-Old Me is Loving This Current Trend” – Bravo (blog)

The author and designer also shared which fashion rule she loves to break.

Born and raised in Laguna Beach (right where we met her!), Kristin Cavallari is the ultimate California girl. But, her marriage to Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has meant relocating to the Windy City—and picking up a whole new cold-weather wardrobe. The author, designer, and TV personality recently stopped by Luxury Garage Sale to sign copies of her book Balancing in Heels and chat up her jewelry line, Emerald Duv. And though she’s a multi-hyphenate career woman, Kristin told The Lookbook that she still finds time to tune into a couple of Bravo shows. “I’m a Housewives girl for sure: Beverly Hills and Orange County,” she said. “I loved Yolanda’s style.”

The title of your book is Balancing in Heels. What heels are you balancing in these days, and what’s your favorite pair this Fall?

I’m obsessed with thigh-high boots this season. I have a pair from my collection, Saffron, that can be worn day-to-night because of the trendy block heel.

Do you remember when you first learned to walk in heels?

I bought my first pair of “heels” when I was in 5th grade; my mom thought they were ridiculous because I could barely walk in them. They were lace up sneakers with a little block heel. I had a lot of practice in those babies to get me ready for the years ahead!

Is your daughter a shoe-lover too? Does she ever get into your closet?

All of my kids are shoe lovers! I let Saylor play with my shoes while I get dressed since it’s a great distraction. She also loves playing with her shoes while I’m putting her clothes away or picking out outfits for her.
Switching gears from shoes: What’s your current beauty-product obsession?

Sisley black rose cream. I use this mask before a red carpet or an event because it fills in all my little lines and evens out my skin.
Now onto fashion! What’s the piece of style advice you give out most often?

To dress for your body type and not necessarily for what looks good on the runway. I’m only 5’3 so I can’t wear many of those clothes; I know now what I can and can’t pull off.
What’s one style rule you always follow, and one that’s made to be broken?

The rule I always follow is to only show one piece of skin, either legs or chest—never both. And the rule that’s made to be broken is no white after Labor Day. I love white year-round.
Which piece in the Emerald Duv collection is most meaningful to you, and why?

It’s hard to pick one piece that’s the most meaningful to me, but I guess I would say all of our chokers since I always had one on in Laguna Beach. The 18 year old me is loving this current trend.
