Tips for a good, quick workout – Atlanta Journal Constitution (blog)

By Madison James

Having trouble finding time to get in a good, quick workout? I have some tips to help.

During the recent ice storm I was forced to work out in a hotel and my creative juices started flowing. Being out of my element, I was pressed for time and still had to find a way to get in an effective workout. So here we go!

Make it fun: When something is fun you find time to do it.  And, if you only have 15 minutes to get moving you should enjoy it. Time to put your dancing shoes on. Yes, dance can be great exercise. To get my blood flowing I turn up the tunes and dance around my house. Don’t take yourself seriously, OK? If you have two left feet who cares?  The goal is to get your blood flowing.  Dancing has so many great benefits: it improves your mood, relieves stress, and can help you lose weight ! If you love it, look into taking ballroom dance lessons or a Zumba class. Keep it fun and you will keep moving!

Distraction: Distraction can be a good thing. Do you have a treadmill, stationary bike, or elliptical that’s now a clothes hanger in your bedroom? My suggestion is to move that to an area where you spend most of your time. Take the family room for example. While you are watching TV or the kids are playing you can get moving. I will pull my spin bike out and watch my favorite TV shows or rent a movie and start peddling. Before you know it you have got in 30 mins to an hour of exercise, plus a movie.  Try this and increase your time by 10 minutes each week.  Before you know it, you will associate your favorite TV shoe with exercise!

Get a timer: I often have a race with myself. You may wonder what I am talking about, but when you’re pressed for time setting a timer can help you accomplish your goal.  If you have 15 minutes your workout can look like this:  5 minutes to run in place or step side to side. Next, jumping jacks for 1 minute rest for 30 seconds and repeat till you reach 5 minutes, followed by as many push-ups as you can for 1 minute rest 30-40 seconds and repeat.  Now sprinkle that in your week at least 3 times. It’s a great way to get moving when time is not on your side!

Remember small changes turn into big changes.  Find a way to challenge yourself, grab a friend, and keep it fun!
