Celebrity Makeup Artist Beauty Tips for Every Skin Tone – TeenVogue.com

When you glance at the temperature and it reads 90+ degrees, the last thing you want to do is coat your face with a ton of makeup, no matter how epic your plans may be. Nor is the goal to spend hours in front of the mirror perfecting your look, only to have all your efforts dissipate in the heat. Summer’s the ideal time to trade your dark, smudgy liners and heavy-duty foundations for more carefully curated products that still have a huge impact. “It’s uncomfortable to wear too much makeup since it tends to get cake-y when you sweat,” says makeup pro Nick Barose. “But it is possible to keep it interesting and low maintenance.” Less makeup doesn’t necessarily equal boring — Nick, who’s worked with celebrities of every skin tone (from Brie Larson and Alicia Vikander to Lupita Nyong’o and Uzo Aduba), suggests using colors that complement or contrast your natural skintone, and letting any unnecessary products hibernate in your makeup bag this season. That way, even though you’re doing very little on the face, your makeup will truly pop. (Plus you’ll cut down your getting-ready routine to five minutes, max.)

If you have fair skin like Sabrina Carpenter—

“The beauty of alabaster skin is its dreamy, ethereal quality,” Nick notes. Ditch the bronzer this summer — it can easily streak in the heat when used on fairer skin tones. Instead, opt for warm peach-, orange-, or coral-toned blushes like Lancôme Cushion Blush Subtil in Splash Coral to bring warmth to your complexion without looking too fake or obvious. “These shades look much more natural on fair skin, and the low-key effect is ideal for warmer weather,” he adds. To make the pigment really stand out on your cheeks, match your lipstick to the exact shade of your blush for a pretty punch of color.

And if you aren’t yet ready to toss out your bronzer altogether, try using a champagne-tinted one for a subtler sun-kissed glow.

If you have olive skin like Sasha Lane—

and aren’t so keen on splurging on new base makeup at Sephora, try mixing in a liquid bronzing gel like Bobbi Brown All Over Bronzing Gel with your foundation to elongate its wear. Then you can play up your natural bronze with different tints of brown on the face — but rather than venture into taupe territory, consider experimenting with shades like sepia, paprika, or cinnamon on lids and lips. “These colors feel exotic and evoke images of a dream destination like India, my part of the world!” Nick says. The subtle red undertones will take your look out of the neutral zone. Nick’s picks: Nars Satin Lip Pencil in Bansar for your pout, and Sisley Phyto-Eye Twist in Copper to line your eyes, Now for the final step — balance out all of the brown by adding a sheer wash of berry blush to your cheekbones. Done and done.

If you have dark skin like Keke Palmer—

One of the best things about a deeper skin tone is you can wear bold — and we mean a bold — colors and not appear outrageous or overdone. “Bright shades pop beautifully against dark skin,” Nick says. He suggests adding simple flicks of cobalt blue liner on the eyes for instant drama, then bringing a natural flush to your complexion with a dusty blush like Maybelline Fit Me Blush in Deep Coral. Matching blue mascara, optional but totally eye-catching.

Keep in mind that deeper skin tones tend to look shiny, even if you aren’t. Darker skin reflects light differently so any ounce of shine can look exaggerated, Nick notes. Enter a mattifying primer like Mally Poreless Face Defender, which will save skin from any hint of sheen. “Your goal is to control shine, but skin should be able to breathe,” he says. “Only use a matte powder on the places you need it, pressing it to your T-zone or whatever your specific problem area is.” Be sure to pack blotting papers for a quick on-the-go fix.
